Arizona Central Credit Union

Background and History

Who We Are

Arizona Central Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial institution that is locally owned and operated by its members. With more than 55,000 members and $400 million in assets, Arizona Central strives to serve its members and the community in a manner which is responsible, fiscally sound and trustworthy.

Our History

Arizona Central was founded in 1939 as the Arizona League Central Credit Union. The credit union was formed as the corporate credit union for Arizona-based credit unions and as the credit union for the employees, board members and officials of other credit unions doing business in Arizona. At the time, regulations prohibited these individuals from borrowing money from the credit union for which they worked or volunteered; therefore, they needed their own credit union to join.

The credit union changed its name to Arizona Central Credit Union on June 19, 1957, to help eliminate confusion between the credit union and the Arizona Credit Union League, the former trade association for Arizona-based credit unions.

The credit union has operated under a state banking charter since its inception and has experienced significant changes in its field of membership. Over its history, the credit union has merged several smaller credit unions, including Phoenix Catholic Credit Union, South Phoenix Baptist Federal Credit Union, Arizona Seniors Guild Credit Union and at least 50 other credit unions. These mergers helped to expand and diversify the credit union's field of membership.

Another major change occurred in 1968, when the credit union began adding select employee groups (SEGs) to its field of membership. Arizona Central was the first credit union in the state to start a SEG program, which allowed small businesses to offer the benefits of credit union membership to its employees without the risk or expense of starting an in-house credit union operation. Over the last 40+ years, Arizona Central has added nearly 2,000 employee groups, or Credit Union Partners, to its field of membership.

In 1979, the credit union spun off its corporate banking functions, which included providing lending and investment services to other Arizona credit unions. The corporate credit union became part of the Arizona Credit Union League and later became FirstCorp.
